Hyperbolic conservation laws abound in the physical and engineering sciences, but their nonlinear and discontinuous nature necessitate numerical approximations. While the stability, compactness and convergence theory for these PDE is at a mature state, the available theory on convergence _rates_ is at best sub-optimal, and in many cases altogether lacking. In this talk I will describe some recent developments in this field. In particular, we argue that the Wasserstein distance is a natural metric in which to measure convergence. This is joint work with Susanne Solem.
