\(\sigma\)-Quasicyclic and projective convolutional codes are introduced. They are kernels of idempotent endomorphisms on free modules over \(R = A[z;\sigma]\), where \(A\) is an algebra over a given finite field. The matrix structure of the endomorphism is used to defined cyclic column distances. They are used to compute the free distance of a projective convolutional code.
