In this talk, we give an overview of combinatorial designs, their q-analogues and related structures. Design theory has a venerable history starting in the 1830s. The connection between combinatorial designs and linear error correcting codes is well studied. In recent years, subspace designs - also called q-analogues of designs - regained interest because of their application as subspace codes in random network coding, which led to many new results on structural properties of the subspace designs. Moreover, it turns out that also the linear codes spanned by the rows of the incidence matrix of subspace designs are interesting. Another important class of subspaces codes is lifted MRD codes. Surprisingly, lifted MRD codes can be regarded as transversal designs and the resulting linear codes can be studied, too. These codes may be useful as so called PIR codes for private information retrieval.
