Due to increasing capacity demands, cellular networks are becoming increasingly dense, and base stations are more irregularly deployed instead of in a lattice. In addition, small cells (micro-base stations) are used to overcome coverage and capacity shortfalls. In such networks, the main quantity of interest (from information- and communication-theoretic points of view) is the so-called signal-to- interference ratio (SIR), which is the ratio between the signal power of the serving base stations and all others that interfere. We present a mathematical model for these next-generation cellular networks that is based on a spatial point process, where points represent the locations of base stations. Using tools from stochastic geometry, we determine the distribution of the SIR, and we show how the mathematical analysis can guide the engineering design decisions for future network architectures.
