Descendent invariants can be defined in Donaldson-Thomas theory in analogy with the situation in Gromov-Witten theory. After introducing these numbers we will discuss a computational formalism (in the toric case) know as the topological vertex. A basic structure result for the degree zero descendent invariants will be given. Time permitting we contrast with the case of stable pairs. This is joint work in progress with R. Pandharipande begun this summer.
