Particular error patterns require differential modulation before the decoder of the error correction. This modulation introduces a degradation of the bit error rate to the system. To overcome this penalty often a feedback loop from the decoder to the differential demodulator is used. Depending on the used decoder this loop can compensate or even over compensate the differential penalty. Difficulties arise if a LDPC code is used. The effect of the iterative decoding structure of the LDPC code competes against the effect of the iterations of the feedback loop. Thus the feedback to the differential demodulation has to be considered in the design of the code.
