Many biomedical simulations involve objects of geometrically complex shape or with geometrically complicated interfaces between different materials. Often, these shapes are described by 3D image data. For this purpose, the method of Composite Finite Elements based on hexahedral grids has been developed and implemented. It can make use of efficient data structures for uniform structured grids without introducing additional degrees of freedom., Still, sub-voxel accuracy in the solution of the respective PDEs can be achieved. We will briefly discuss the construction of corresponding basis functions and challenges in finding an efficient solver. Treatment of different boundary conditions will also be described, as well as numerical homogenization techniques for finding effective material properties. Different applications will be considered, including elasticity of vertebal bone, radio frequency ablation and liver regeneration.
