What is.. Benjamini-Schramm convergence?

In a seminal paper Benjamini and Schramm introduced a notion of distributional limits for finite graphs. In this talk I will give an elementary introduction to Benjamini—Schramm convergence of finite graphs. We will then see how to generalize this to the more geometric context of Riemannian manifolds. If time permits I will explain how this can be used to obtain a new compactification of the moduli space of finite area hyperbolic surfaces.
