Today most communication systems (DAB, DVB-T, LTE, DSL, etc.) use the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) concept. The reason is an old mathematical result with which many complicated channels can be transformed into a set of independent Gaussian channels. A basic introduction how this works will be given were the discrete Fourier transform plays an essential role. This transform also allows the analysis of gene regulatory networks in molecular biology. When the concentration of proteins is not important but only if they are on or off such network can be described as Boolean functions. It is shown that in case of canalizing Boolean functions the mutual information between input and output is maximized.
