It is well-known that MRD codes are generic, but Gabidulin codes are not. However it is still a quite challenging task to construct MRD codes which are not Gabidulin. In contrast to MDS codes, where the decoding error probability for bounded distance decoding only depends on the parameters and the symbol error probability (so all MDS codes are equally good), different constructions of MRD codes are of particular interest since the decoding error probability depends not only on the equivalent class, but even on the representative in the class. To understand the construction problem slightly a bit more we investigate the structure of MRD codes to see how complicated its pattern must be.
