Transient wave propagation often occurs on unbounded domains eventually including localized heterogeneities. To simulate these phenomena it is useful to
decompose the computational domain in two non-overlapping sub-domains: the
first one (often called the interior domain), being bounded and containing all
the defaults, the second one (the exterior domain) being unbounded and homo-
geneous. In consequence, one could use a FEM discretization combined with
finite differences in the interior domain. In the exterior, integral methods could be used to implement transparent boundary conditions and obtain the solution elsewhere in the exterior. Both methods should talk to each other through the art-
ificial boundary separating the domains.
