Topological properties of the Hitchin fibration and Hodge theory of the character variety.

I will describe a remarkable correspondence between Hodge theoretic invariants of the character variety, parametrizing (GL_2-valued, twisted) representations of the fundamental group of a curve, and topological invariants of the Hitchin map, defined on the moduli space of rank 2 stable Higgs bundle. I will also briefly discuss some other example of this phenomenon and a more general conjectural statement.
