We will consider the real algebraic varieties (which we will suppose to be nonsingular and will treat as complex varieties with a real structure; by real structure we mean the complex conjugation involution) up to the following equivalence relations: diffeomorphism of the real part of a variety, diffeomorphism of the real structure, and deformation of a variety together with the real structure. We will discuss how a choice of a fixed class of complex varieties restricts the topological properties of real varieties in the chosen class and at what extent the topology of a real structure may determine the real structure up to deformation.
