Codes are being designed, implemented, and re-adapted by researchers from various domains.
In his seminal 1948 paper, Shannon presented a conceptual model for digital communications that it is also used for storage solutions.
The translation of the communication channel into a storage device is a simplification that hides practical problems.
Since this method still prevails, it seems fair to ask: What is a practical code for a global distributed storage system at exabyte scale?
Entanglement codes are an attempt to address this question.
The encoder propagates redundant information across a large scale distributed system while creating a virtual storage layer of highly interconnected elements.
The first part of the talk gives a brief literature review to reconcile theory and practice using approaches from information theory, crypto and storage communities.
The second and main part of the talk is dedicated to discuss fault-tolerance, performance and repair costs of entanglement codes.
