Applied Probability and Statistics

In today's research, statistical methods are gaining importance. Increasingly complex scientific problems even require the development of new and adequate statistical methods. Current challenges include:

  • Evidence-based medicine, especially genetics and genomics
  • Financial mathematics
  • Environmental sciences
  • Infection epidemiology

To successfully apply statistical methods as a scientist nowadays, one must master a variety of techniques, including:

  • Regression for correlated data
  • Dealing with missing values
  • Analysis of event and longitudinal data
  • Methods for model selection and validation

The modules in the minor study program will provide participants with a solid foundation in probability and statistics.

Structure

The minor study program is offered by the Institute of Mathematics and is aimed at students who have an interest in stochastic methods and modelling (excluding mathematics students).

The minor study program can be chosen during the bachelor's degree either with a scope of 30 ECTS or in an in-depth version with a scope of 60 ECTS.

The minor study program is an ideal preparation for specialized master's programs such as "Biostatistics", "Quantitative Finance" and "Evolutionary Language Science".
