They are kernels of idempotent endomorphisms on free modules over $$R = A[z;\sigma]$$, where $$A$$ is an algebra over a given finite field. The matrix structure of the endomorphism is used to defined cyclic column distances. They are used to compute the free distance of a projective convolutional code.
