New master program in Biostatistics at UZH

The new master program in biostatistics has been approved by the Faculty Board on October 7 2010. The program will start in Fall 2011 and enrollement is open. Further details are given at http://www.math.uzh.ch/biostat/

Therefore, the UZH cannot accept applications for the old master program in statistics anymore. As an alternative option, you can apply to the master program in statistics at the ETH, see details at http://stat.ethz.ch/education/master.

Statistics as a science studies concepts and methods concerning the analysis of empirical data. Statistical methodology is important for research in most scientific fields as well as in business, insurance, finance etc. Traditionally based on mathematics, statistical methods most heavily rely on probability theory allowing to draw conclusions from data that are prone to random effects, including an assessment of the uncertainty of such conclusions.

The master program in biostatistics is based on the cooperation between the Institute of Mathematics and the Biostatistics Unit of the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine of the University of Zurich (UZH) and the Seminar for Statistics of the Department of Mathematics of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH).

The master program in statistics offers insight into statistical thinking and methodology. It leads to a so called "specialized" master, implying that it is a useful and direct continuation of a bachelor degree in all fields that include quantitative aspects.

For the master's degree a total of 90 credit points are required where 60 credits are obtained from core courses and elective courses from both statistics/mathematics and a field of application. The master's thesis at the end corresponds to additional 30 credits.
